There is nothing more important to the future of our American families than good-paying, jobs with the potential for growth. We must not let the deep recession we are now in the midst of dampen our drive for innovation and competitiveness.
Jobs are not created by the government. In fact, government intervention more often leads to job loss because of excessive taxation, regulation, and bureaucratic inefficiency.
The federal government must reduce the burden of taxation and regulation on American business, while ensuring that our citizens have a safe place in which to work.
American jobs will be created when the private sector has confidence that their efforts will be rewarded in the marketplace.
I was proud to author, along with State Senator Brandt Hershman, the most sweeping telecommunications de-regulation in the nation in 2006. The net result in just three years has been more than $1.5 billion in new investment in Indiana, 2,500 new jobs, and 4,000 to 6,000 jobs saved.
Americans will out-work their foreign competitors any day. However, the federal government must help our universities, junior colleges, trade schools, and high schools prepare our children and re-train our adults for the global markets.
When American workers are well-equipped and well-trained to produce the most innovative products and services in the world, everyone wins.
