Issues

Agribusiness is the lifeblood of Indiana. Farmers are faced with a new operating environment that includes growing government regulation, an uncertain tax climate, intense international competition, and volatile market conditions. These new dynamics are pushing some Hoosier family farms to the brink. Agribusiness needs partners in Congress who are willing to play a leadership role in defending and nurturing our agricultural future.

As a former member of the Agriculture Committee of t he Indiana House, and a voting member of the Indiana Farm Bureau, I understand that farmers need a stable environment in order to survive, and to plan their family’s future.

We must work to ensure that Indiana farmers have a level competitive field. Livestock producers must be able to operate without burdensome restrictions and regulations. Access to affordable energy, and the ability to sell alternative energy produced on the farm, like wind and methane are also critical. I authored legislation in 2009 to make sure farmers can sell their energy products in the marketplace. I will continue to push for ways to help Indiana agribusiness thrive.
