Mike Murphy Files Candidacy for Congress

Republican Mike Murphy has officially filed his candidacy for the Fifth Congressional District to run against Dan Burton this May.  State Representative Mike Murphy cites Burton's nearly 30-year tenure in office and his failure to lead on the issue of jobs for Hoosiers.  Murphy also notes that his strong record in the legislature of creating an environment for business that enables the creation of jobs is a sharp contrast to Burton's record in Washington.  In addition, Murphy released some polling data showing that voters agree.

A poll conducted in late January (with a margin of error ±5.6%) by Bellwether Research, Inc. of Alexandria, VA (a company used by Governor Mitch Daniels) indicates that only 28% of likely voters in the 5th District Republican primary think Burton should be re-elected. That is a 7-point drop from a similar poll conducted by the same firm in February, 2009.  Meanwhile likely Republican primary voters say Murphy is equal to or ahead of other potential challengers when asked “Which candidate, if any, do you think stands the best chance against Dan Burton? ”  Murphy was given the nod by 16% of poll respondents.
